September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month and to celebrate recovery Summer Sky Treatment Center is hosting a 5K Run for Recovery run/walk. The proceeds of the event will be donated to STAR Council (Solutions Toward Addiction Recovery), a substance abuse agency located in Stephenville, Decatur, Weatherford, Granbury, and Cleburne.  Recovery Month celebrates the positive impact of treatment for addictions in areas throughout the nation; STAR Council and Summer Sky are making efforts to enhance community awareness and educate the public about the realities of addiction and the victories of receiving treatment.

STAR Council is an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility with counseling, treatment, and a prevention department providing character-building life skills to students. While the agency is primarily grant funded by the state of Texas, it is generous donations and community support that allows STAR Council to thrive in areas for which the state cannot provide sufficient funding to offer education classes and remedies for substance abuse-related offenses. Individual and organizational contributions enable the organization to reach a greater population through educational alternative activities for both children and adults in 15 different counties. Contributions also allow STAR Council to participate in various community programs that support and promote healthy life choices.

This year’s Recovery Month theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery.” In 2006, 23.6 million people 12 or older needed treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction; however, only about 10% found and received treatment. Consistent support is the key to helping those who have yet to receive treatment for an addiction.  Your business has an opportunity to Join the Voices and support people in your area needing recovery and help celebrate those who have found it. To make the Run for Recovery 5K a success, Summer Sky needs sponsorships from the generous community. Each sponsorship level includes different advertisement package for your company (see attachment) and a limitless amount of support for someone truly requiring it to live their own life again. Your kind donation to this cause will forever be appreciated by Summer Sky, STAR Council, and those affected by addiction.

In light of this year’s Recovery Month theme “Join the Voices: Real People, Real Recovery” we have attached a short testimony written by a real person battling addiction in our own area. This is all the evidence we need to know the partnership between Summer Sky and STAR Council has touched people in the community of Stephenville. This story provides us with the encouragement and drive to make 2011 Recovery Month an even bigger success; a victory you can help make happen.  

Dear Summer Sky’s Run for Recovery,

I attended the Run for Recovery in 2010, and I just wanted to thank you for putting on this event. I have been silently battling a drug addiction for 3 years now. I didn’t know what to expect when I came to the event, I got there in time to listen to the guest speaker say his personal story. I was motivated from his story and knew that there was light at the end of the tunnel. I had always thought that I couldn’t beat the addiction but knowing that there are others that have overcome the addiction I knew it was possible for me. That day I contacted STAR Council for help. To this day, 67 days I have been sober. Thank you for putting on this event! I will forever be a participant in this race because it has personally changed my life.
